En Vogue

I know it’s pretty New Left to piss on higher education these days but then again it’s easy to piss on most anything from behind the safety of a monitor or tuff pose. Here’s the thing: it doesn’t matter what you think about higher education because the only reason it’s unimportant to you is because you’re white or already had whatever privilege the education you so fecklessly deny you need to succeed “supposedly” bestows. Come to my classes. Talk to the students. I dare you to look them in the eye and tell them that they don’t need to be there, that they’re wasting their time. And when you raise your hand to ask a question I’ll remind you to call me Dr. Powell only a few times because you wanna talk about labor I’ve earned that shit and I like the way it sounds. I’m not 25, I didn’t just read Marx for the third time, and I don’t have the time to explain to you that privilege feels different in practice than it looks on paper. I’m sorry that your teachers weren’t any good, made you feel like you knew everything there was to know about whatever it is you think you know. But that’s just not the way knowledge works. And not all teachers are loafing toads atop giant mushrooms drinking the sweet red wine of tenure. I bust my ass and I’m good at what I do and what I do is no 2/1. I can be a hot mess everywhere else. That’s fine. Everyone understands the failed potential of a bro too scared to get out of his own way. Living life gives us that right. Getting a BA and writing off college for everyone else doesn’t. That’s simply being an ideologue and those motherfuckers are terrible.
